Well hello, this is Mark Kanty with Release Dynamics and it’s a pleasure to be here today with Dr. Loren M. Hill of The Acclivity. Now Dr. Hill specializes in helping people advance their careers in academia and specifically today, we want to talk about how do you get that sought-after position as an adjunct professor.
Welcome, Dr. Hill.
Thank you, Mark. It’s my pleasure to be here today.
Great, it’s a pleasure to be with you too, and let’s dive right in because I know that people who are listening to this or watching this want to get right to the meat. So you and I have had discussions around the fact that people get stuck, and you know that this idea of becoming an adjunct professor, unfortunately, it is scary for a lot of people.
A lot of people don’t think it’s achievable and yet you and I both know because you’ve described this to me… that it’s not impossible. That people can get there when they know the right stuff, when they know how to get the job done, if you will, and how to actually advance their career.
So you and I were talking about three main problems that you’ve come across over and over again where people get stuck. So would you take a minute just to kind of give me the high bullet points there on what those three problem areas are that you see people stumbling with?
Mark, I would say the three main areas people stumble with and one you’ve already hit upon would be you know the research. Maybe they don’t think that they can do it but that’s probably because they haven’t done the research.
The other, I would say would be networking. Building that foundation, it’s sometimes who you know that will help you to get in.
The third area I would say would be sort of the collaterals. So what’s your CV look like? What are your interview skills? Those things are areas in which we would consider collateral. So again we’ve had the research, the network, and the collateral.
Great, thank you. Thank you that’s really helpful and I know that you know you and I have obviously talked about this before we kind of got on camera here and that you were also sharing with me that there’s kind of one underlying biggie you know… I don’t know if we call it a real reason but there’s kind of a big force that that is affecting people who get stuck or to maybe not get to where they want to and get to that adjunct professorship. Tell me about that, describe that for me again.
Sure one of the big hurdles I would say would be time. Who has the time to do it? Now you may have the desire or the inclination… You may have heard about it and then you start off on a path and then you find that it’s really overwhelming and it’s very time-consuming.
This leads me to the second area which would be experience. So if you’ve never had a job like this or sought a job like this or gone into this discipline you may not have an idea of how to put your strategy together that then maximizes your time and your resources so you really want to look for someone who’s experienced to help you get through.
This is fantastic thank you.
