December arrives quietly, but it carries weight.

In higher education, December is not an ending. It’s a hinge — a threshold between what has been demanded of us and what we may choose next. The semester still presses forward. Budgets tighten. Planning cycles peak. Yet beneath the noise, something shifts.

December asks a different question.

Not What more can I do?
Not How do I finish strong?

But rather: What am I choosing to carry?

In Episode 59 of Your Strategist Is In, I name December’s work as discernment — not urgency, not performance, not resolution. Discernment is slower. Quieter. More courageous. It doesn’t describe what’s happening; it decides what matters.

Over the fall, many academic professionals have been moving through ambiguity — an unspoken weight that isn’t burnout or failure, but uncertainty. Ambiguity blurs boundaries. It makes everything feel equally important, equally heavy. And when everything feels critical, nothing can be chosen intentionally.

December interrupts that cycle.

Using the metaphor of abscission — the natural process by which trees release their leaves — this episode reframes letting go as wisdom, not collapse. The tree isn’t failing when it releases what can’t survive the winter. It’s conserving energy. It’s preparing.

The same is true for us.

Discernment invites us to notice the quiet signals: the role we’ve outgrown, the expectation that has become a burden, the version of excellence that no longer fits who we are becoming. These are not signs of weakness. They are information.

This episode also offers guided reflection questions designed not to rush answers, but to create space:

  • What stayed meaningful for me this year?
  • What became thin or hollow?
  • What am I pretending I can still carry?
  • What truth have I already named privately but haven’t honored publicly?

December isn’t about doing less for the sake of rest. It’s about doing less with intention. Choosing what stays. Choosing what goes. Choosing what deserves to cross the threshold into the new year.

Because the year will turn with or without your permission.

The choice to lead with discernment — that part is yours.

Before stepping into January’s reimagining work, take a moment to reflect: What are you choosing to carry forward — and what is ready to be released?  Listen to Episode 59 and let discernment guide your next season.
