You’re Qualified. That’s Not the Problem.

Many directors and chairs quietly ask the same question:

I’m qualified. Why am I not being selected for dean roles?

Because selection at that level is not based on qualifications alone.

It’s based on positioning.

Hiring committees do not evaluate who you could be. They evaluate who you are already perceived to be.

If you are primarily known for departmental excellence, you will be evaluated as a strong departmental leader. Even if you are already operating beyond that scope.

Credibility vs. Visibility

Credibility is built through good work.

Visibility is built through how broadly and strategically that work is seen.

Most leaders build one and neglect the other.

Credibility keeps you respected where you are. Visibility is what allows people to see you at the next level.

Why Waiting for the Job Post Is Too Late

By the time a dean role is posted, informal evaluations have already happened.

Senior leaders already have a mental list of who they see as “ready.”

That perception was formed months earlier through:

  • Cross-college involvement

  • Institutional initiatives

  • How often your name is present in rooms beyond your department

  • Whether others experience you as a college-level thinker

Positioning is not something you do during the application. It is something you build long before it.

If this resonates, you can schedule a Higher Ed Leadership Strategy Call to talk through your situation and determine next steps.
