Winter in academia can feel like a double punch: short days, long nights, and an endless to-do list. Deadlines, teaching, research—it all keeps piling up while the world outside feels gray and uninviting.

For faculty, especially women of color who often shoulder extra responsibilities, the mental toll can be heavy.

Let’s call it what it is: the winter blues are real, and ignoring them helps no one.

Here’s how to keep your mind clear, your energy steady, and your focus strong through the cold months:

  • Light matters: Short days mean less sunlight—and less sunlight impacts your mood. Open blinds, go outside during daylight hours, or invest in a light therapy lamp. Small shifts make a big difference.
  • Move your body: Physical activity isn’t just for your health—it’s for your mind. Even 10 minutes of stretching, walking, or yoga can reset your energy and improve your mood.
  • Lean on your people: Winter can feel isolating. Schedule regular check-ins with trusted colleagues or friends who understand what you’re juggling. Connection is medicine.
  • Set realistic expectations: You’re not a machine. Adjust your workload where you can, and focus on progress over perfection.
  • Take breaks seriously: Rest isn’t wasted time; it’s essential. Step away from the desk, read something for pleasure, or just breathe.

Action Tips:

  • Try a “daylight walk challenge”—a quick 15-minute stroll at lunchtime to get natural light and clear your head.
  • Set one non-negotiable “connection moment” each week: coffee with a colleague, a call with a friend, or a virtual hangout.
  • Block 10 minutes at the start of each day for mindful breathing or journaling to center yourself before the work begins.
  • Write down what actually needs to get done this week, and let go of the rest—at least for now. Winter is hard enough without unrealistic goals.

You’re not alone in this. The winter blues may feel heavy, but small, intentional actions can help you reclaim your energy and focus.

Prioritizing your mental health isn’t selfish—it’s how you show up for yourself and your work.

Breaking barriers and achieving your goals isn’t easy, but with the right support and strategies, it’s absolutely possible.
